How to Choose the Right Nozzle Tip for Your Spray Gun

The nozzle tip is a small but incredibly important component of your spraying equipment. Choosing the right one is critical for a good finish. Nozzle tips are identified by a three-digit number, like "517". The first digit ("5") when multiplied by two gives you the spray fan width at 12 inches away (a 10-inch fan). The last two digits ("17") indicate the orifice size in thousandths of an inch (0.017"). You should choose a fan width that is appropriate for the size of the part you are spraying. You should choose an orifice size based on the viscosity of the material you are spraying—thicker materials like primers require a larger orifice, while thinner materials like stains require a smaller one.

Airless vs. Air-Assisted Airless Spraying

The choice between airless and air-assisted airless spraying equipment depends on your need for speed versus quality. Airless spraying uses very high fluid pressure (up to 3000 PSI) to atomize the paint. It is very fast and can handle heavy, thick coatings, making it great for protective coatings on large structural steel. However, the finish quality can be rough. Air-assisted airless is a hybrid system. It uses a lower fluid pressure and adds a small amount of compressed air at the nozzle cap. This "shaping air" helps to create a finer atomization and a softer, more controlled spray pattern. It is the preferred choice when you need a high-quality, decorative finish but still want to spray at a high production speed.
